Day in the Sun: Skin & Food Routine

Saturday, I attended the Peach Pedal, which is a hilly, hot ride out in Weatherford, TX (about 20 minutes west of Fort Worth). I did the 39 mile route and needless to say, spending 3 (or more) hours out in the Texas sun in the middle of July can be hard on the body and skin. It takes a lot of preparation, which I won’t go into much in this post, but I started my day off with a light breakfast.


Two hard boiled eggs and a Lara Bar might not seem like much to sustain 40 miles, but bike rallies are fully supported which means that there are rest stops every 8-10 miles with fruit, sandwiches, cookies, water, Gatorade, and more. So, I only need enough to “get me going”.


On top of a light breakfast, I prepare a recovery drink: Hammer Nutrition Recoverite. I swear by Hammer products and have always noticed good results. I have their protein powder, electrolyte tablets, supplements, and gels! But the Recoverite is probably the best part of my routine. I use this for not only my bike rides, but also as a recovery drink after my normal workouts. It’s helped keep soreness down, prevent charlie horses, and forces me to drink water and rehydrate after a long time in the sun.


Finally, I spoil my face when I’m done. I never use exfoliators after being in the sun for hours, so instead, I swear by Lush’s Coalfact Charcoal Bar. I’m not going to sugar coat it. It’s an expensive bar of soal (at $14 for 3.5oz), and I even baulked a little when I bought it. But, it’s done wonders for my face by removing all of that salt, sunblock, and grime without making my face feel stripped. Even though it’s not really an exfoliant, it does have “granules” that are almost massaging. I follow that up with a face mask. Lately, I have been enjoying my Leaders Coconut Gel Mask with Broccoli. They are expensive masks (at $6 a piece), but they feel really great and it’s so, so soothing to have that cool gel on your face after facing a 100 degree morning.

Finally, I have been using up my samples of Merlot Collection Moisture Day Cream. If you click that link, you’ll see why I only have samples! Haha! I don’t know if it’s worth the price, but it’s definitely one of the better moisturizers that I have ever used.

I Run for Chocolate [Hot Chocolate Run Recap]{Photo Heavy}

I ran the Hot Chocolate 5k with some friends (who did the 15k). This is my first time doing this run and doing any run (minus my Spartan’s) that had so many people!  Start time was at 7:30 (though being in coral E meant that the start time was really 7:45ish).

I decided to run with my knee brace since this is my first run in a while. And I’m never without my trusty dusty HRM and watch. That running pack fits my HTC One M8 really well, plus chap stick, car keys, and a small cereal bar. My Pearl Izumi’s are filthy, but still holding up great! I might have to buy a new pair soon. I’ve tried so many running sneakers and so far, these (by far) are the best. I can do a review on them if you all are interested!

The flask was just in case it got warmer than I expected and needed more water that a single bottle. (Soiler, it didn’t.) The Recoverite is my favorite recovery drink and makes up the core of my recovery when I’m riding. I eat significantly less on run days than I do on bike days, so I only had one Trail Mix bar and a few bites of the cliff bar.

Natural Hair and Fitness

IMAG2345One of the things that made me wait so long to actually take the plunge into the natural hair world was the fact that I enjoyed working out! Even after getting the texturizer cut out, I was frustrated. If you were (are) like me as a new natural, you watched loads of videos about twist-outs, wash and gos, bantu-knots, and whatever else. Well, I thought my only option was to just suck it up and do my hair every night and take it out ever morning.

Let me start by saying, that nightly/daily routine was NOT maintainable for me. (It might work for you, in which case, I am envious.) But, when I say that I am lazy, I am not exaggerating. I don’t mind spending an hour or two on my hair, but not every day. So, for the first few months after my chop, I simply let me hair be a fro and detangled when it was wash day. That meant, I wasn’t maintaining my hair the way I needed to be: the edges were out, it was always tangled, and I had to add product everyday because moisture just seeped out.

The last thing that I found frustrating was that I felt completely alone in the natural hair world. I was the only one natural out of my fitness friends (or so I thought) and I found it really hard to find natural hair care blogs that catered to an athletic lifestyle! BUUUTTT! There is definitely a light at the end of this tunnel! Here are some of the things that I learned!

  • Protective Styles are your friend! I currently choose a protective style and stick with it Monday through IMAG2362Friday/Saturday, then have fun on the weekends!
  • Become a product junkie. Yes, this can be expensive. Yes, I was even warned by my stylist (when I got my chop). No, I still was not prepared. I (like you probably) thought Shea Moisture was the be-all, end-all to moisturizing natural hair. Well, it’s not. It literally took me months to figure that out. I finally bought a new cream, and shampoo and conditioner before finally feeling like I was getting a handle on my mane.
  • Cover-up those locs! I do a lot of outdoors stuff in the summer, and Texas heat sure can suck some moisture out of your hair! If I’m running, biking, etc, I’ll put a bandana on my hair. If I have my hair styled, I’ll find products that claim to aid in UV protection and I’ll spend extra time moisturizing! Don’t underestimate the drying power of the summer sun ladies!
  • Find like-minded people. This is last on the list, but it’s so important. It’s easy to feel as if you are doing something wrong when you don’t have that mental confirmation that there are other people in the world out there who workout in marley twists, or crochet braids. (I’m embarrassed to admit that I thought I’d ruin crochet braids if I tried to workout in them.)

  • Sporty Afros: This is the main blog that I refer to when I am having a athletic/hair care crisis. They provide breakdowns by hair style, type of workout, nutrition, etc!
  • NaturallyGG: Their main focus isn’t fitness per say, but I love how they refer their hair care back to their lifestyle (and even the time of year).
  • Green Beauty: I actually recently found this channel, thanks to a fellow blogger. It’s presented in a very scientific way, and so far, I’ve used it to aid in defining my hair type as a whole. There always recommendations on various treatments and for all of you DIYers, Green Beauty has so many homemade recipes for hair care!
